Which clock for which room
Every clock in the JALL range was designed for a place: a nightstand, a wall eight feet up, a bedside table in a care home. This page matches the place to the clock.
| Room or person | What matters there | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom, adult | A dark room at night; a gentle start | A sunrise alarm clock, display dimmed to off |
| Bedroom, child or teen | A dark room, sleep sounds on a timer, no phone | A sunrise clock or the FM radio alarm with night light |
| Nightstand, minimal | Something small that does not glow | A wooden digital clock with auto-dimming |
| Kitchen or hallway | Read from a few steps away, hands busy | A 10 to 16 inch wall clock |
| Classroom or office | Read from the back row; a timer | A 16 to 22 inch wall clock with remote |
| Gym, warehouse, hall | Read from far away | A 30 inch wall clock |
| A parent with dementia | The day and date, in words, all day | A calendar day clock, 8 inches or larger |
| A traveller | Silence and a battery | A silent analog alarm clock |
The questions to ask first
Before choosing a clock, we suggest asking two questions. First, how far away will you be when you look at the face? A clock on a nightstand only needs to be legible from a few feet away, while a clock in a living room or classroom must be read from across the room. Second, how dark do you need the room to be when you sleep? Some people want a completely dark bedroom, while others prefer a gentle guiding light. Knowing these answers helps narrow down the choices immediately.
The adult bedroom
For your own bedroom, we often recommend a sunrise alarm clock. Instead of waking you with a sudden loud noise, the light on this clock brightens gradually before your scheduled alarm. You can set this dawn simulation to last anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes, allowing you to wake up to a fully lit room. If you want a dark bedroom, the time display on these models can be dimmed completely to off, so nothing on the nightstand glows through the night.
Children and teenagers
A child's room benefits from a gentle transition into the morning. A sunrise clock or our FM radio alarm clock works well here. These models feature built-in night lights and 25 sleep sounds, which can run on a timer from 10 to 480 minutes to help them drift off. When using sleep sounds for young children, pediatric guidelines suggest placing the clock well away from the child's head, keeping the volume low, and using the timer so the sound only plays for a short time.
The nightstand that should not glow
If you prefer a traditional alarm format but dislike bright screens at night, our wooden digital clocks are a practical choice. The digits show directly through the wood-grain surface, giving the clock a clean, natural appearance. These models feature automatic dimming based on the time of day, lowering their brightness when the sun goes down so your bedroom stays dark. They also allow you to set up to three separate alarms, which is useful if you have different waking times on weekdays and weekends.
Kitchens and hallways
In busy shared spaces like kitchens and hallways, you need a clock that you can read at a quick glance while moving about. Our digital wall clocks in the 10 to 16 inch range are designed for this purpose. They feature auto-dimming sensors that adjust the brightness based on the light in the room, keeping the numbers readable without causing a harsh glare. Most of these models also feature automatic Daylight Saving Time adjustments, meaning you do not have to take them down from the wall twice a year to reset the hour.
Classrooms and offices
For larger professional and educational spaces, visibility and utility are key. Digital wall clocks from 16 to 22 inches work best in these environments. These models include remote controls, which allow you to adjust settings or set countdown timers without needing a ladder. The built-in countdown timer and alarm functions are helpful for timing tests, presentations, or meetings, keeping everyone in the room on schedule.
Gyms and large halls
In very large spaces, such as home gyms, community halls, or garages, standard wall clocks can be difficult to read. For these areas, we offer a 30-inch digital wall clock. The oversized digits ensure that you can track the time even from the far end of a large room or while exercising.
Supporting a parent's routine
If you are choosing a clock for an aging parent, clarity is the most important factor. Our calendar day clocks, available in 7, 8, 10 and 12 inches (we would choose 8 or larger for a room), spell out the day of the week, the month, and the date in full with no abbreviations. We recommend placing the clock directly facing their favorite chair or the bed so it is always in their line of sight. These clocks run on mains power, so you do not have to worry about batteries dying. You can set up to 12 daily alarms to help remind them of medication times or daily appointments.
For travel
When you are away from home, simplicity and reliability are what matter most. Our four-inch analog alarm clock is built for travel. It runs on a single AA battery, so you do not need to look for an outlet near the bed. The sweep second hand moves silently without any ticking sound, ensuring your hotel room remains quiet. A simple button on top activates a temporary night light when you need to check the time in the dark.
This is a guide to choosing between our own clocks. It is not medical advice, and no clock here treats a sleep disorder or a memory condition.
